Preschool Activities

Education and schooling done before the age of 3-5 years is considered preschool. The name can simply be broken into pre and school, ‘pre’ being a prefix of before or prior to. It is also known as play school in many places. These schools are known to be the first stage of learning and development. It is strongly believed that the mental growth of child starts taking place at this stage of life.

Preschool activities for children are designed to make them start the learning process before the proper education while making them enjoy what they study. Children are supposed to develop certain skills at their own pace, like motor skills, thinking skills, language skills, etc. At the preschool age, the world of children is usually the one of transformation, the interweaving of the fantasies and the out of the world thoughts to the worldly knowledge and little wisdom.

There are certain arguments regarding whether the preschool is necessary at all. There are important points in both the columns. One is about the grandparents and a homemaker mother. If either or all of them are present, often the need for a preschool doesn’t come. It’s the nuclear families with working parents that need the preschools. It is not an obligatory education and is needed only to prepare the child for kindergarten. Preschool activities for children are specially made to develop a child for the obligatory school where it is supposed that the child has some basic start in education.

There are simple mathematical activities that center on anything that can be counted. The imagination is the only limit, and it is well known that children’s imagination knows no limit. Therefore, interesting counting exercises are introduced in the preschool and if the children enjoy it they stretch it far and have tremendous growth. Usually, before preschool, a child can hardly count but preschool becomes the base for future education.

The ability to read is something that is taught at preschool. A child can hardly speak and doesn’t know many words. At preschool, specific reading activities make them speak even slightly complex sentences and the vocabulary is enhanced drastically. A lot of it is because the age of learning coincides with the preschool, and hence whatever a kid finds interesting, kid learns with ease. Therefore, the preschool activities for children are very important to enhance their learning abilities rather than hampering them.

There are basic science lessons imparted in the preschool. Also, as per new international curriculum, bilingual lessons are also imparted at various preschools.

Teaching Your child to Deal with Bullies

Children face different sort of problems in school and one such problem is dealing with bullies. The best method to handles bullies is by ignoring them but what if that method does not work? Parents must help children in handling such situations because being bullied is never ever a good experience and it can seriously affect self-confidence and self-esteem of the kid. The problem of bullying is almost a universal one and faced by numerous kids in schools. Times have also changed and there should be new strategies to handle such serious problems. Telling your kid all the time to ignore such problem will not work.

Parents should consult school administration in regards to such issues. The problem of bullying has been taken seriously in many schools and many educational institutions are taking strong measure to curb this menace. Some of the common steps being taken by schools are establishing anti-bullying rules and procedures, mediation between victims and bullies, stern monitoring and classroom discussion etc. Check whether, your kid’s school has implemented any such program and also offer your suggestions.

You should also focus on your kid and see what makes him vulnerable to bully attack. Make sure he has good group of friends and he stays in a group because bullies usually don’t pester a kid who is walking in a group. Encourage your child all the time to voice his objections and stand tall. No point being a silent victim all the time. Build self-confidence in the kid and he will be able to tackle any adverse situation. Teach him to look people in the eye and remain firm. Make him join a self-defense class where he will be equipped with required defense mechanism.

The cyberspace kids

Today’s children are growing up with new technologies that are creating new generation gaps. Not only do children today breed on Youtube and Facebook, but also their world includes with video chats, digital books, video games and the likes. This accelerating pace of technology, which the children are being exposed to, is creating huge generation gaps. Children, who are in their formative stages of development, are being exposed to so much in so little time that they are ageing fast & are losing out on their childhood. The place where this generation gap is most visible is in the way these kids communicate and make their entertainment choices. Studies have shown that children as young as eight and nine SMS more often than the teenagers do! The study also revealed that the newer generation; unlike their older peers, lack patience and expect an instant response from everyone they communicate with. Because this generation is being brought up in an instantaneous communication enriched world, they also expect their parents and teachers to give them quick replies.

Children today are thriving on the virtual world. Most of them have more friends in the virtual world than the real world. They are hooked to playing video games, love isolation but at the same time are actively socializing virtually, prefer chatting than talking on the phone, communicate effectively but at the same time find it difficult to express emotions etc.

A mother of an eight year old daughter revealed that her child’s life is shaped up by technologies and high tech gadgets. She knows nothing other than a world that is full of e-books, Skype video chats, and games on the iPhone! All these facts reveal that parents need to put certain restrictions on the technology usage patterns by their kids. Try and not expose your kids to such addictive gadgets at such an early age. It is important that your child learns to play cricket (for instance) than press buttons and makes runs!

Is Playschool Education Necessary?

If not in the metros and the urban cities of India, many families still feel that playschool education is not necessary and that it adds burden on to the child at an early age. This is a wrong thought. In fact, playschool education builds a foundation for the child for his suture. It is a bridge that prepares the child for school. It is true that a few decades ago, the concept of playschool was unheard of in India however, this is now hugely popular. Most parents living in urban cities want to send their kids to playschools because they have realized the importance of a playschool in a child’s life.

Most preschools in India are privately owned. This is one of the major reasons that the concept of playschool has not reached semi urban and rural areas. Government must build a scheme that lays importance to playschool education.

Playschool concept has been adopted from the west. In the west most mothers and fathers are working and they do not have enough time to devote to their kids. Hence, they send the kids to playschool where they are not just taken care of but are also made to learn and understand using a variety of toys and techniques. In India however, many mothers want to completely devote their time to their children. Such parents who feel that they can be with the kid and teach them something may consider not sending their child to the playschool. Having said that, I feel playschool helps a child to develop social skills. He or she meets other children, interacts with them, and learns from the environment and grasps a lot of new things which I feel contribute to a child’s learning.

Sending your child to a playschool helps ease him into a routine earlier on. Playschool is definitely something that helps your child in his learning and growth and more than that, most schools in today’s time prefer giving admission to children who have completed their playschool course.

Child Behaviour

Every parent wants his child to respect elders. But that is not the case. Many parents often complain about how to make their kid respect adults. This disrespect can be in form of words or actions. It is the duty and responsibility of the parents to instil that value in the child. Children learn all the crucial values of life from the parents. The seeds of such behaviour start from toddler stage only. The process must begin with parents teaching their child to respect their parents. A child normally mimics the words of his parents. The common word used by the child is ‘No’. They learn this word from the parents. While raising a child, it is important that parents choose their words carefully because it is going to affect them in the long run. Developing a healthy sense of love and respect is of uttermost importance.

While a baby begins his life with walk and crawl, he feels curious about each and every thing. During that period parents often say no for things they find appropriate. The habit of ‘No’ develops from here. Once your child grows old and still keeps saying no every now and then, that’s a cause of worry. Parents need to change this habit of his quickly. Don’t take this habit jokingly because this is turning out to be a dangerous habit. The behavioural change process should start from there. Parents should better nip this habit in the bud.

Children have this habit of touching the boundaries before final withdrawal. Discipline is quite important so that your child grow up to be a responsible adult. Parents should also be consistent in their behaviour. They should maintain a stand and stick to it.

Fancy dress

Regular dressing for our child itself seems a great job and the intention is to do it well. There are so many opportunities to dress the child in the latest dresses and use accessories to accentuate their innocence. Fancy dress is a great occasion for parents to get into creative thinking and use skills that portray the message well.

Understanding the theme for fancy dress is very important. If it’s the first time to dress your child then comfort plays an important part. An uncomfortable child will be reluctant to go on stage and it is quite a downer for the child. Usually parents are very enthusiastic during the competition. Any competition is incomplete without the spirit. Loads of fun, applause, appreciation and memories clicked via fotos are a wonderful way to capture the precious moment.

In case the topic is general, then understand your child’s favorite theme like a vegetable or a toy. The ideas can be translated into a chart board, card board, color sketches and easy hangings around the neck to convey the theme. This is usually acceptable for the child too. It is strange, that kids tend to be more creative and suggest various themes or ideas as they grow.

Under 5 age groups can be also dressed in apt ready pick up dresses available in shops on hire basis. Rehearsals at home will be important to mend seams and loose dresses. This will also boost the confidence of the child and rehearsing the dialogues with dramatic expressions will also be a nice idea.

For your child’s birthday party, it would be wonderful to arrange a general fancy dress theme with small gifts awarded to all participants. The mantra is about enjoying.

School Uniforms – Perspective

It is dream of every parent to see his kid joining a good school and excel in academics. Right from the time when child is born, his growing up process has a lot to do with his education. And as far as education and other aspects of personality are concerned, school plays a very vital role in child’s life. This is where; he learns not only the words printed in the books but also learns to interact with others of his age. He remains on his own for the duration he is in school and no doubt, this is the biggest learning ground for the kid. School is the temple of knowledge and here a child learns to taste numerous hitherto unseen aspects of life. The topic of school has also been a major topic of discussion all over the world as regards to its effect on children. Right from educationalists, psychologists, philosophers and behaviour analysts, they all have their own views about different effects of school on kids. One such issue within the periphery of school is dress code. This has definitely been a heated topic.

There are several benefits of having a dress code or school uniform. One of the reasons championed quite often is concentration level of students more focussed on education rather than wardrobe. They will not be really concerned with different dress combinations. Having a dress code is also instrumental in taking school environment more seriously and not getting distracted with other trivialities. Factors like violence and social conflict also gets decreased because of proper dress code.

On the downside, dress code curbs self expression of a child. It also goes against the spirit of individuality. All in all, it’s a mixed bag considering the pros and cons of school uniforms.

Is your little one ready for pre-school?

Preschool is the first step that introduces your baby to an institution of learning. After home, this is the second environment to which a baby is exposed to where he or she acquires new skills, learns new concepts and knows more about the world. It is here where the baby will meet new people from their own age group which will be the first step towards building relationships.

The concept of a play school or a pre school is relatively new in India and it is indeed your little ones first step towards mainstream education. Pre-schools are full of fun and learning. They have a lot of activities that encourage a child to learn.

Almost all children between the ages 2-3 years are enrolled in a preschool and this is especially the trend seen in urban cities and the metros. This in metros has almost become like a prerequisite for getting admission in a school. Now-a-days parents don’t even wait for their child to turn two. In fact parents have to register their babies’ name well in advance.

However, parents must realize that if their child is not ready for going to a preschool, then it can become very stressful for them. Most parents today feel that their child should not be left behind and hence they hurry for everything without really looking at their child whether he or she is ready for the same or not. All children may not necessarily grow up and be comfortable with going to a pre-school at the age of two.

To avoid putting your child through stress, make sure that you prepare him or her for such an environment. Your child is ready for a play school when he can sit in one place patiently. Key thing here is to learn that every child will take his or her own time to grow up and learn and parents need to catch that and act accordingly.
